TheSportsTechnician.com was founded in May 2009. The concept of the business was the idea of a guy called Stuart Middlemiss. With over 20 years experience in the sports retail industry, holding key roles with most of the well known sports retailers in the UK and latterly with, which was then the biggest sports retailer in Europe. The aim of the SportsTechnician.com website is to provide a great service to the public, not only by offering them the best sports performance products from the best Sports wear brands worldwide, but to help educate the consumer on sports supplements and the technologies and benefits of those products.

The Sports Brands invest huge sums of money in their products to enhance the end consumer’s performance. Every technology that is or has been developed has been done so to improve the athlete’s performance or to limit the chances of injury. Most of benefits of these great technologies never reach that end consumer, that’s why we’re here.

Sports Performance

One aspect of sports performance we offer advice on is that of sports nutrition and sports supplements. Many athletes starting out or even looking to enhance their sports performance will look at supplements to try and enhance their performance. The Sports Technician offer a select range of products which will help your body build muscle and gain weight, lose fat and tone up, increase your energy and recover faster, become stronger and more powerful, or whatever you need to reach your goals.

The needs of an athlete will differ depending on their sport and individual goals. As a rule-of-thumb, athletes need to be able to perform at their best during each training session, and then recover quickly in time for the next one. Instead of drinking water when you train, we offer products that help you sustain energy, delay fatigue, and retain focus and motivation. After you’ve finished training, your body is primed to take on board extra nutrients to build new muscle and replace lost energy. One product we often recommend is ‘RecoverMax’, which we believe to be the ultimate post-training recovery drink for all sports. Its unique combination of carbohydrate and protein helps restore glycogen levels. Using ‘Recovermax’ in conjunction with your regular training could bring you great benefits, including increased muscle power, increased work output and reduced muscle fatigue.

The Sports Technician

Ultimately, the aim of the TheSportsTechnician.com is to become the one stop choice for sports enthusiasts and athletes in all sports. As well as great sports performance enhancing products, you will be able to get advice on your chosen sport and access to the industry leaders in Fitness, Coaching and Nutrition.

Our mission is to bring you the best sports products from the world’s best sports brands. Along with that we will provide you with access to the best advice around. Everything from training tips and fitness programs to diet, nutrition and injury advice.

Rugby is a sport that is growing in popularity ever since England won the World Cup in 2003 and reached the final again 4 years later. The teams’ performance has persuaded potential players and managers to pursue this as a career. If you are looking to become a rugby coach whether it is at league or union then you need to be aware of the dangers.First of all you need to choose between the 2 different forms of the game. Rugby League is traditionally played in the North of England and as such the Northern teams have dominated the sport. Rugby Union is traditionally played in the South and (unsurprisingly) the Southern teams dominate. However, both these sports are played nationwide with teams from both ends of the country contesting for the biggest prizes. As a rugby coach you are probably aware of the potential danger that the players face each time they step on to the pitch. This means that you, as a coach, should be fully insured in case the worse happens. You are responsible for the team when playing and training so you have to find the combination of preparing them for a game and ensuring their safety.During a training session you will look to set the players obstacles to overcome and try and teach them different skills that will give them a competitive edge during a game. Training sessions can sometimes be as brutal as the game itself with players trying to impress you to give them a game. This is where your skills as a coach come in to play as you need to hone in any aggression shown by players.Getting the necessary cover is easy as you can find it online. This cover does not just cover you against injury to one of your players but it also covers you against theft, stolen and damage to any of the equipment you use during a training session. Equipment for rugby can be very expensive so you need to ensure you take good care of it, but we all know accidents happen easily and if it does you need to have sufficient insurance to protect yourself.

Rugby coaching can be very rewarding but it is vital that you are fully covered as injuries are a common occurrence during training and games. Get online where you can find the most comprehensive cover available for rugby coach insurance as well as many other sports coach insurance.

The key to success for any sports program is to carefully plan and implement a well designed and structured training plan.
To do this, several steps need to be followed in order for this to happen successfully:
Design a general plan following the various phases of the season. By doing this, you will be able to carefully plan specific areas to work on depending on which season you are in (pre-season, competitive, post- season). This will also allow athletes to clearly see a structured program that you have set in place for them.
Set specific goals for that particular phase and then create structured training sessions for that period of time (e.g. developing endurance in the pre-season). Experienced coaches know when to change from one training phase to another. For example, strength training is needed before power or plyometrics training. Flexibility is needed before speed training.
Design each individual training session with a specific goal in mind (such as working on agility, power or speed). A training session without any structure or guidance will lead to unsatisfactory results. It’s not the amount of time you spend training but the quality and what you get out of it that is important.
Carry out the session by properly instructing and teaching each skill, being organized, punctual and in control of your athletes. Basically, as a coach, you need to lead by example. Your athletes will feed off your drive and motivation to succeed and they will in return give back the effort that you are willing to put in.
Key Tips for conducting a successful training session:
Having a plan is essential.
Design a session using sport specific exercises.
Be organized, if you are not, then your players will notice.
Make it fun and allow your athletes to enjoy their sport.
Be observant in your training sessions.
Teach, coach and instruct your team in a positive way.
Strive to improve on every training session.
Lead by example.
Have a back-up plan if the weather conditions are not suitable.
Specific Goals For Each Training Session:
Give clear instructions on how to perform each skill. Some of your athletes may have already mastered the skill required of them and some may be struggling with the technical aspects of that skill. This is one of the most important aspects for a coach of a team to understand, not all of your athletes respond in the same way!
Demonstrate the skill to the group and then answer questions if asked. Some athletes respond better when a skill is “visually” demonstrated rather than you just describing how to perform the skill.
Carefully plan appropriate drills for the time allocated, that is maximize your time available. Follow strict guidelines on the number of sets, repetitions and rest used in order to maintain a smooth running session.
Include variety into your training sessions, otherwise your athletes will become bored with performing the same drills over and over again. There are many books, guides and ebooks out there on the market that can literally provide you with hundreds of drills which will help you add variety to your programs. Global Sports Coaching for example has the biggest collection of tennis drills available to all tennis coaches.
Show enthusiasm and give positive feedback to your athletes. People perform better and respond in a more positive way when they are given constructive comments rather than continuous criticism.
Make the session fun. Include game-like fitness drills (cross training with another sport). People mostly participate in sports because they find them fun and rewarding. Athletes should be able to work hard and also enjoy their sport.
Perform testing early on in the pre-season and record the progress made by each athlete. Testing is a very important component of any training program as it provides specific information on the progress (or lack of progress) being made.
Once certain goals are met, then increase the number of drills, the intensity, repetitions, sets, and so on to constantly challenge your players.
Have a back-up plan. If you plan a session outdoors and it rains, then have a back-up plan for an indoor session. This is important for some outdoor sports such as tennis or golf. Athletes from these sports can still go inside a sports facility and perform some fitness training or even discuss tactics.
Allow for individual differences between athletes. Some athletes may excel in the speed drills but perform poorly in the strength drills. Set individual goals for each player. Football coaches have learned over the years to split up their athletes according to position or abilities. For example, American college football teams often train with their own individual coaches such as special teams, kicking coach, offensive or defensive coaches.
After each session, make notes on what went well, what needs to be worked on further, record all test scores, and think of ways to improve on the next session.
Check that all of the equipment is in good working order. Besides preventing an accident due to faulty equipment, having your equipment organized will allow for the smooth running of drills and training sessions.
Be sure that the surface is appropriate for the fitness component that you are training. For example, would you take your basketball players out onto the football field to do some cross training knowing that there are pot holes on the playing area and thus leading to increased risk of twisting an ankle? It is often best to conduct your training sessions on the actual surface that you will compete on. For example, tennis players should perform their speed and agility training on the surface they play their matches on.
To be successful as an athlete you must learn how to train at the highest levels in order to achieve this success when in competition. As the old saying goes “Practice How You Want to play.”

It can be challenging and a lot of hard work or it can be simply just taking some time out. However, if you look at your gap year one thing should be gained from your time out – reward. Developing a skill, learning a language, experience a different way of living – all can be rewarding and mean that your gap year was a fulfilling experience.

One gap year experience is to play sport. Are you passionate about sport and feel like you want to share your passion with others? How about sharing this with youngsters in an exciting overseas environment? If these two questions really grab your attention then here is another one – are you going to do something about it? With a gap year sport programme you can develop your coaching skills whilst passing on your knowledge and enthusiasm to the next generation.

Sport coaching placements can last for between 10-19 weeks, depending on the sport you coach. Participants coach sport to youngsters in local schools and community teams. On average coaches may also be able to do a part time job and, if desired, it is often possible to supplement this with additional umpiring or refereeing work for your specialist sport.

Whilst challenging and demanding (you could be responsible for a whole class of future sporting heroes!) there is no doubt that the experience of working with youngsters over the course of a school term is highly rewarding. Coaching sport is also a fantastic addition to any CV, allowing you to demonstrate initiative, leadership and communication skills.

With most programmes, you will live alongside other gap year participants that could be in 4 star city centre accommodation that provides easy access via local transport to your place of work. You would also be assigned a local mentor to be on hand to assist you throughout your programme and you will be guaranteed a minimum number of coaching hours per week.

We recommend that people interested in coaching sport obtain suitable coaching and first aid qualifications before departure, as this will assist you in not only getting a job but also giving you assurance of coaching others. It is also beneficial for you to obtain umpiring/refereeing qualifications in your chosen sport in order to take advantage of the full range of work available.

If you are unable to obtain a coaching or First Aid qualification prior to your departure then don’t worry. Some schools are happy to employ people provided they have playing and coaching experience. You can also enrol on a coaching and First Aid course upon arrival in your chosen destination.

Really keen participants can also join a local sports club should you wish to play as well as coach sport during your programme and really make the most of your time and skill.

Sport is a wonderful way to discover a new culture. By combining playing or coaching sport with a gap year, you become integrated into a local community with their sports club or academy and become a second family. Playing or coaching sport provides a framework for your time away. Supplement this with travel, work experience and a whole new group of friends and that’s gap year experience in a nutshell.

People that are passionate about sport and travel can really make the most of their time overseas. Many gap year companies can organise regular social events and excursions, which ensure a fantastic experience for all, whilst ensuring you are always in touch with peers and local people alike. Gap year mentors also assist participants in finding work, dealing with any issues that may arise and co-ordinating travel plans – a real commitment to a personal experience.

So if you are passionate about sport and travel, then why not spend your Gap Year playing and coaching sport in exotic locations around the world.

Sport Lived organise sporting Gap Year programmes in exotic locations around the world. Play or coach your favourite sports and enjoy the excitement of living overseas. www.SportLived.co.uk

Being a sports coach can be an incredibly rewarding job, even if it is just a part time you can still enjoy the experience of nurturing an individual or a team which has talent and developing them into top level professionals of their sport. Much like a school teacher teaching a child to read and write, you are able to notice a hidden talent in your athletes and being the best out in them, leading them to succeed at their sport. But what makes a good coach? Experience is no doubt a key factor. Having played a sport for many years you will have learnt many great skills, strategies and tactics from your own coached. This has undoubtedly helped successful managers in the world of Football, Basketball and Rugby. The same can be said for any sport, a coach who understands the game and how it’s played is always going to have the edge over a coach who has learnt everything they know from a book.Another sign of a good coach is studying the game, as well as personal experience a good coach will study other teams and other coaches for tips. Many professional sports teams will have entire teams of scouts whose job it is to spy on the upcoming opponents to deduce their strategy, it isn’t unheard of for rival football managers to go to each other’s games to get the low down on how the team play. Watching past game videos if they’re available is a great training aid to point out weaknesses and where the team can improve. The key factor in any sporting coach is the ability to motivate and inspire your team. This is often a tough and rare skill to master, even the poorest performing team need congratulating for positives in their game but also encouragement to improve for next time. Even during a success the more critical coach will reiterate that no one’s perfect and there may have been a time when winning that the team let their guard down and allowed the opponents to score a goal or get a slight advantage. The final and most underestimated skill a good sporting coach should have is an understanding of the team as individuals. Many players may feel disheartened or that they are lacking in some areas, this happens a lot with younger athletes. They may become so disheartened that they want to quit the sport, a good coach should notice any players that are feeling this way and deal with it appropriately. Enforcing how important they are to the team may not be the advice they are looking for, it’s important to let the player know that they should partake in the sport only if they want to, if they aren’t having fun then maybe they need a change, this may not mean quitting altogether but maybe changing position. These tips should help you become a better coach, friend and source of inspiration for your players and team as a whole.

Practice makes perfect, that is what my old Gran always used to claim. What she did not mention, is the significance of practicing things going how you would like them to go, rather than considering what to do if it does go bad.

How often do you ask what is the worst that might happen?! For athletes though, it is crucial that they concentrate on achieving, on being the winner, first time, each time. Being a bit off form at the vital moment is just not a choice.

So the very first thing I tell athletes who come to see me in Berkeley for help in improving their performance is to practice success. From an attraction standpoint, we all know that you are going to attract more of what you are targeting, so it is important to focus in success. Scientists at first assumed the neural nets existed only in the brain, but we now know that they are definitely a network thru your complete body.

This mean that if as an example, you concentrate on running, as you are laying in your bed, you’ll be turning on and accessing the muscles in your legs. It is sort of likely that they’ll twitch unconsciously as you consider moving them. This was famously observed by Milton Erickson, the person principally in charge of bringing hypnosis to the clinical arena.

When Milton was a kid he was struck with polio and left paralyse. As he sat in a chair, aching to be outside playing with his brothers, imagining running in the long grass and kicking the soccer, he spotted that his legs had started to swing in the chair! NLP uses a systems called anchoring.

In this, the mind creates a link between a strong feeling and an external trigger. This could have negative and positive implications for our athletes. For instance, there could be negative anchors (triggers that make a bad feeling) associated to past failures which are set off whenever the athlete is performing or due to perform.

If the trigger for the bad feeling can be established, then the negative anchor can simply be removed. If an athlete needs to connect into resourceful feelings, for example calm, focus or power, an anchor can be made with a trigger of, squeezing their fingers for instance.

An easy way to become the best at what you do, is to find some other person who is the best at it, and learn how they do it.

If you suspect that Tom Brady is the best passer the world has ever seen, it is feasible to model the way that he looks, feels and behaves to make the results he achieve. When the method has been removed, it can be installed in some other person using walk thru, metaphors or hypnosis.

Hypnosis offers a deep state of relaxation which can be prolonged to maintain calm and ease uneasiness, as well as installing positive enabling ideas ,eg having the ability to focus and concentrate without effort.

At a deeper level of understanding, NLP can be employed to uncover an athletes values and reveal and resolve any conflicts here. This implies that their focus is on defeat, making it likely this is the thing that’s achieved. In fact, if sports or athletics is your life, it is not the taking part which counts, but the winning.
